FAQ's

How can I choose a good hay?

Intacol provides free advisory service that ensure that you are choosing the right product for each horse. Intacol analyzes the nutritional quality of hay in order to suggest the best compound feed for each case.

Is it hay better or worse than straw? Why?

Straw is the cereals stalk while the hay is the complete plant with leaves. This difference means that the feed value of the hay is higher than that one of the straw. Straw is poorly digestible so it can difficult the normal digestive tract flow in sensitive horses, and it can lead to decreased performance. Straw should always be the last option when choosing a fibrous feed for a horse.

Should hay be supplied before or after compound feed?

The long fiber, as hay, straw or haylage, should preferably be supplied prior to the compound feed for several reasons. Eating hay first, the horse will eat more slowly the compound feed and he will be able to digest it better, taking better advantage of the energy, protein and vitamins that it contains. Fiber promotes gastric motility so that when supplied after compound feed, it eventually stimulates the speed on the small intestine, reaching the contents more quickly into the large intestine; this is not desirable because it may cause laminitis or colic.

What´s the best way to make changes on my horses feeding management?

The horse is a monogastric herbivorous animal. The large intestine (cecum and colon) contain an important microbial flora that is responsible for the balance of the entire digestive tract. Thus, all changes on feeding management must be made slowly and gradually, mixing the old feed and the new one for a period of time (5 to 7 days).

How many times, in a day, should I give compound feed to my horse?

Horses have a small stomach that has a limited digestive capacity when compared to other monogastric animals. So, it´s considered a good practice never provide more than 2 kg of compound feed at each meal. However, Intacol advises to provide compound feed at least in 3 meals daily. Even when total daily amount is less than 4 kg, the practice should be maintained because it makes the compound feed more useful and contributes to improve horse performances.

What is the minimum daily amount of forage that should I offer to my horse?

The horse´s daily feeding must be composed of at least 60% of forage. A horse in moderate/ intense working level (30 to 40 minutes, 5 to 6 times a week) should eat 10 kg of dry matter daily, which means that he should eat 4 kg of compound feed and 6 kg of quality forage, approximately.

Should I provide supplements to my horse to supplement his diet?

Intacol compound feeds ensure the optimal daily intake of nutrients that are essentials to horses. These products are adjusted to every physiological phase and growth phases and are adjusted according to horses’ working level. However, high competition horses or horses in special conditions may need to be supplemented with some specific nutrients.

Compound feed: Are mixtures of cereals better than pellets?

No, they just represent different types of feed. Choosing the right type of feed for each horse must be based on practical reasons, because some horses respond better to some type of feed and others not. However, mixtures of cereals may represent the most appealing type of feed for horses in general. For better results, you can always consult our qualified technicians.
